In short

Ayurveda treats anxiety (Chittodvega) as a Vata disturbance of the mind: too much movement, too little steadiness. Dr. Bali assesses the pattern, sleep, digestion and Prakriti, then combines formulations such as Brahmi, Shankhapushpi or Ashwagandha with pranayama, a settled daily routine and Sattvavajaya, the classical counseling method. Shirodhara and Nasya are given in Chandigarh for cases that need them.

01

Who this page is for

  • Persistent worry, restlessness or a racing mind on most days for six months or more.
  • Panic attacks with palpitations, sweating or breathlessness, once a local doctor has checked the heart and thyroid.
  • Anxiety that disturbs sleep, appetite or digestion, or shows up as IBS-type symptoms.
  • Reliance on tranquilizers or antidepressants that you would like to reduce, with your prescriber's agreement.
  • Anxiety in a high-pressure job, after a loss, or during a long stretch of overwork and poor rest.

02

How Dr. Bali approaches anxiety

Charaka describes two mental Doshas, Rajas and Tamas, alongside the three bodily Doshas. Rajas is agitation and excess movement; Tamas is dullness and inertia. Anxiety is a Rajas state carried by Vata, the bodily Dosha of movement, and it is rarely confined to the mind. The same Vata excess disturbs sleep, appetite, the bowel and the heartbeat, which is why anxious patients so often arrive with a list of physical complaints.

Dr. Bali reads the whole pattern. A Vata-dominant person with an irregular routine, skipped meals and late nights has a different anxiety from a Pitta person burning with frustration and overwork, and the plans differ. Charaka's third line of treatment, Sattvavajaya, means steadying the mind through knowledge, patience and restraint, and it sits beside herbs and diet, not behind them.

Classical reference · Chittodvega

The opening chapter of the Charaka Samhita names Rajas and Tamas as the Doshas of the mind, as Vata, Pitta and Kapha are the Doshas of the body. Chapter 11 sets out three kinds of therapy: Daivavyapashraya (faith and ritual), Yuktivyapashraya (reasoned use of diet and medicine) and Sattvavajaya, restraint of the mind from unwholesome objects, which is the classical root of Ayurvedic counseling for anxiety.

What the assessment looks at

  • The shape of the anxiety: constant worry, sudden panic, or health fear, and what sets it off.
  • Sleep, appetite, bowel habit and palpitations, since Vata disturbs all of these together.
  • Daily routine: meal times, caffeine, screens, work hours and time spent outdoors.
  • Current medication, so that nothing prescribed is changed without your doctor.
  • Prakriti, Nadi and mental constitution, to see whether Rajas or Tamas dominates.

When to see a doctor locally first

Thoughts of ending your life or harming yourself need emergency help now: call your local emergency number or a crisis line, or go to the nearest emergency department. Chest pain, breathlessness or a racing heart during a panic attack should be checked by a local doctor to rule out a heart or thyroid cause. Do not stop antidepressants or tranquilizers without your prescriber; Dr. Bali will plan any change with them.

What treatment may include

  1. 01

    Settling Vata through routine

Fixed meal and sleep times, warm regular food, less caffeine, and a daily wind-down, since an unsettled routine feeds an unsettled mind.

  2. 02

    Medhya formulations

Brahmi, Shankhapushpi, Jatamansi or Ashwagandha in combinations set for your pattern, the classical Medhya (mind-supporting) herbs, dispensed with a certificate of analysis.

  3. 03

    Pranayama and yoga practice

Slow breathing practices taught step by step and set to your capacity, drawing on Dr. Bali's Diploma in Yoga Therapy. Ten minutes a day, done consistently, matters more than long sessions.

  4. 04

    Sattvavajaya Chikitsa

Structured conversation in consultations about what feeds the worry and how to steady the mind, the Charaka method of treating the mind through the mind.

  5. 05

    Shirodhara and Nasya in-clinic

Warm oil streamed over the forehead (Shirodhara) and medicated oil through the nose (Nasya), given at the clinic in Chandigarh for anxiety that does not settle with routine and formulations.

  6. 06

    Follow-up

Review at four weeks, then monthly. Any reduction in prescribed medication is planned with your prescriber, never on your own. Online patients are followed by video with formulations shipped to them.

The combination is set after assessment, not before. Dr. Bali does not recommend the same protocol for every patient with the same diagnosis.

04

Formulations, shipping and the law

Formulations Dr. Bali prescribes are dispensed in India and shipped to patients abroad by tracked courier, typically within 7 to 14 days. Each parcel carries an itemised invoice, an ingredient declaration and the batch certificate of analysis. Patients in India receive them by courier within 2 to 4 days, or collect them at the Chandigarh clinic.

  • Every batch is tested by an independent laboratory for identity, heavy metals, pesticides and microbial contamination. The certificate ships with the parcel and is emailed to you.
  • Mineral-based classical preparations (Bhasma) are not shipped internationally. Dr. Bali prescribes plant-based formulations for patients abroad.
  • Shipments stay within a three-month supply so they clear customs as personal-use supplements. Country-specific rules are on each country page.
  • In-clinic procedures such as Basti, Ksharasutra and full Panchakarma are given in Chandigarh; the assessment, diet and formulations can be managed by video.
  • Consultation fees are confirmed at booking. Formulation costs are quoted before anything is dispensed.

Dr. Bali is licensed to practise Ayurveda in India. For patients abroad, an online consultation is an Ayurvedic assessment with guidance on diet, routine and classical formulations; it does not replace your local doctor, and prescribed medication is never stopped without the prescriber's agreement.

Comparison

Ayurveda vs Allopathy for Anxiety: An Honest Comparison

For anxiety, conventional care leads when symptoms are severe, when panic or suicidal thoughts are present, or when daily function has collapsed: CBT and SSRIs have the strongest evidence. Ayurveda reads anxiety as Chittodvega, aggravated Vata in the mind, and treats it with routine, diet, Ashwagandha, Brahmi and Shirodhara. The two work together, and SSRIs are never stopped abruptly.

Frequently asked questions

Can Ayurveda treat anxiety without antidepressants?

For mild to moderate anxiety, routine, Medhya formulations, pranayama and Sattvavajaya are often enough on their own. If you already take an antidepressant or a tranquilizer, treatment begins alongside it, and any reduction is planned with your prescriber once you are steadier. Severe anxiety, or anxiety with depression, needs a psychiatrist involved as well.

How long does Ayurvedic treatment for anxiety take?

Sleep and physical symptoms such as palpitations and a churning stomach usually ease within three to four weeks. A steadier baseline with fewer anxious days typically takes three to four months of formulations, routine and daily practice. Reducing long-term medication, where that is the goal, is slower and is paced by your prescriber.

Which Ayurvedic medicine is best for anxiety?

Brahmi and Shankhapushpi for an overactive mind, Jatamansi where sleep is broken, and Ashwagandha where anxiety comes with exhaustion are the usual choices. No single one is best. Dr. Bali sets the combination after assessment, since the same anxiety can run through different Doshas in different people.

Can I take Ashwagandha or Brahmi with my antidepressant?

Often, but not always, and it depends on the drug and the dose. Tell Dr. Bali exactly what you take. He chooses formulations that sit safely alongside it and will tell you if any combination should wait. Never add a herb to a psychiatric medicine on your own.

Can I consult for anxiety online from the USA, Canada or the UK?

Yes. Assessment, routine, pranayama instruction, Sattvavajaya and formulations are all managed by video, with plant-based formulations shipped to you with customs paperwork and a certificate of analysis. Only Shirodhara and Nasya courses require a visit to Chandigarh, and most online patients do not need them.

Does Ayurveda help panic attacks?

Once a heart or thyroid cause has been ruled out locally, yes. Panic is treated as an acute Vata surge on top of the underlying pattern: slow breathing practice for the attack itself, and routine, diet and formulations to reduce the frequency. Patients are taught what to do in the first two minutes of an attack.

Is Ayurvedic treatment for anxiety just counseling and yoga?

No. Diet, daily routine, Medhya herbal formulations and, where needed, Shirodhara and Nasya are the bulk of the treatment. Pranayama and Sattvavajaya sit alongside them because Charaka treats the mind through the body and the body through the mind, not one without the other.

What does treatment cost?

Consultation fees are confirmed when you book and depend on the consultation type. Formulation costs depend on the plan and are quoted before anything is dispensed, so there are no surprises after the consultation.
