Obesity and Weight Management

Ayurveda treats obesity (Sthaulya) as a disorder of fat tissue (Meda) and Agni: food is eaten faster than the body can process it, fat builds, the channels block, and appetite rises. Dr. Bali corrects Agni, diet and routine first, adds formulations such as Guggulu and Triphala, and Udvartana where useful. The aim is steady loss, without crash diets or purging.

Who this page is for
- Weight that has crept up over years and no longer shifts with the diets that used to work.
- Obesity alongside prediabetes, fatty liver, PCOS, high cholesterol or knee pain.
- Constant hunger, heaviness after meals, day sleepiness or breathlessness on mild effort.
- Weight gain after childbirth, a thyroid diagnosis, or a period of stress and poor sleep.
- A history of crash diets and regain, and a wish for a plan you can keep for years.

How Dr. Bali approaches obesity and weight management
Charaka names the overweight body (Atisthaula) first among eight bodies to be pitied, and his description is precise: heavy Meda blocks the channels, so the other tissues starve while fat keeps building; Vata, confined to the gut, fans Agni so hunger rises; the person tires easily, sweats, smells and sleeps too much. He lists the causes as overeating, sweet and heavy food, lack of exercise, day sleep, absence of worry and inherited tendency.
Dr. Bali reads weight by Prakriti and by what is driving the gain. A Kapha Prakriti gains slowly and steadily on a normal diet; a Pitta type gains around the middle with strong appetite and acidity; a Vata type gains erratically with stress and poor sleep. Thyroid, PCOS, insulin resistance and medication are checked before anything else, because no diet corrects an untreated thyroid. The plan is set to be kept for years, not weeks.

Charaka describes Atisthaula, the overweight body, its causes and its eight defects: shortened life, restricted movement, difficulty in sexual function, weakness, foul smell, sweating, excess hunger and excess thirst. He rules that treatment must be heavy in bulk but low in nourishment (Guru and Apatarpana), so that hunger is satisfied without feeding Meda: barley, honey water, formulations that scrape fat, exercise, staying awake and mental effort. He warns against harsh reduction, which aggravates Vata.

What the assessment looks at
- Weight history: when it started, what has worked, what has been regained, and your current eating pattern in detail.
- Thyroid, fasting insulin or HbA1c, lipids and, in women, PCOS signs, with tests requested where missing.
- Agni and hunger: whether appetite is strong, erratic or absent, and how food sits after meals.
- Sleep, day sleep, activity, stress and medication, several of which Charaka names as direct causes.
- Prakriti and the Dosha pattern of the gain, which decide the diet and formulation.
When to see a doctor locally first
Rapid unexplained weight gain with swelling of the legs or face, breathlessness at rest or lying flat, chest pain on exertion, loud snoring with daytime sleepiness that may be sleep apnoea, or weight gain with purple stretch marks, easy bruising or a rounded face need a local doctor first. Obesity with a BMI above 40, or with uncontrolled diabetes, should be under a physician alongside any Ayurvedic plan. Dr. Bali will ask about these first.

What treatment may include
- 01
A diet you can keep
Guru-Apatarpana in practice: barley, millets, pulses, plenty of vegetables and bitter foods, fixed meal times, no snacking and an early dinner. Portions satisfy hunger; the food simply feeds Meda less. Set to your Prakriti and your kitchen.
- 02
Formulations that reduce Meda
Classical preparations built around Guggulu, Triphala, Vidanga and Musta, chosen for your Dosha pattern and dispensed with a certificate of analysis. They support the diet; they do not replace it.
- 03
Udvartana
Vigorous massage with dry herbal powders, the classical Kapha-Meda therapy, given as a course in Chandigarh. It is described for reducing Kapha and Meda and firming the body.
- 04
Exercise and routine
Daily exercise built up gradually to the point of light sweating, no day sleep, early nights and early rising. Charaka treats these as treatment, not advice.
- 05
Treating the drivers
Where thyroid, PCOS, insulin resistance, stress or poor sleep is behind the gain, that is treated alongside, with your prescribing doctor where medication is involved.
- 06
Follow-up
A review at six to eight weeks with weight, waist and any repeat tests, then every two to three months. Online patients are followed by video with formulations shipped to them. Loss is expected to be steady, not dramatic.
The combination is set after assessment, not before. Dr. Bali does not recommend the same protocol for every patient with the same diagnosis.

Formulations, shipping and the law
Formulations Dr. Bali prescribes are dispensed in India and shipped to patients abroad by tracked courier, typically within 7 to 14 days. Each parcel carries an itemised invoice, an ingredient declaration and the batch certificate of analysis. Patients in India receive them by courier within 2 to 4 days, or collect them at the Chandigarh clinic.
- Every batch is tested by an independent laboratory for identity, heavy metals, pesticides and microbial contamination. The certificate ships with the parcel and is emailed to you.
- Mineral-based classical preparations (Bhasma) are not shipped internationally. Dr. Bali prescribes plant-based formulations for patients abroad.
- Shipments stay within a three-month supply so they clear customs as personal-use supplements. Country-specific rules are on each country page.
- In-clinic procedures such as Basti, Ksharasutra and full Panchakarma are given in Chandigarh; the assessment, diet and formulations can be managed by video.
- Consultation fees are confirmed at booking. Formulation costs are quoted before anything is dispensed.
Dr. Bali is licensed to practise Ayurveda in India. For patients abroad, an online consultation is an Ayurvedic assessment with guidance on diet, routine and classical formulations; it does not replace your local doctor, and prescribed medication is never stopped without the prescriber's agreement.

Frequently asked questions
How much weight can I lose with Ayurvedic treatment?
Dr. Bali does not quote figures, because loss depends on your starting point, Prakriti, drivers and how closely the plan is kept. The aim is steady loss over months that stays off, rather than a fast drop that returns. He will tell you at the first consultation what he thinks is realistic in your case.
How long does Ayurvedic treatment for obesity take?
Heaviness, hunger swings and day sleepiness usually improve within four to six weeks. Weight follows more slowly, and the first review of the numbers is at six to eight weeks. Most patients work with the plan for six to twelve months, after which the diet and routine continue on their own with occasional reviews.
Is Ayurvedic weight loss medicine safe?
Formulations built on Guggulu, Triphala and similar classical herbs are well tolerated when prescribed and dosed for the person. Dr. Bali does not use unlabelled slimming products, purgatives for weight loss, or anything sold as a fat burner, and asks that you tell him every medicine and supplement you take.
Can I consult for weight loss online from the USA, Canada or the UK?
Yes. Assessment, diet, routine and formulations can all be managed by video, with formulations shipped to you with customs documentation and a certificate of analysis. Udvartana is given in Chandigarh; it helps but is not needed for the plan to work.
Does Ayurveda use fasting or crash diets for obesity?
No. Charaka warns that harsh reduction aggravates Vata and does damage, and crash diets are also how weight is regained. Short, supervised light-diet days are sometimes used in strong Kapha patients, but the plan is built on regular meals of the right kind. Skipped meals usually make weight gain worse.
What is Udvartana?
A vigorous massage with dry herbal powders, applied against the direction of hair growth, described in the classical texts for reducing Kapha and Meda. It is given as a course of sessions in Chandigarh, usually alongside diet and formulations, and is not a substitute for either.
Will I regain the weight after Ayurvedic treatment?
Weight returns when the routine does: late dinners, day sleep, snacking. The plan is designed to be kept, which is why it is built around your own kitchen and schedule rather than a special menu. Patients who keep the meal timing and exercise generally hold their weight; those who drop them do not.
What does treatment cost?
Consultation fees are confirmed when you book and depend on the consultation type. Formulation costs depend on the plan and are quoted before anything is dispensed, so there are no surprises after the consultation.
