In short

Ayurveda treats PCOS as a Kapha and Vata disorder that blocks the menstrual channel (Artavavaha Srotas) and disturbs Artava, the reproductive tissue. Dr. Bali assesses cycle history, weight, insulin signs, hair and skin changes and Prakriti, then combines diet and routine with formulations such as Shatavari, Kanchanar Guggulu, Ashoka or Lodhra. Virechana and Uttarabasti are given in Chandigarh where indicated.

01

Who this page is for

  • Irregular, delayed or absent periods with polycystic ovaries on ultrasound.
  • PCOS with weight gain, facial hair, acne or hair thinning that has not settled on the pill or metformin.
  • Trying to conceive with PCOS, before or alongside fertility treatment, with your gynecologist informed.
  • Heavy or painful periods, or cycles that turned irregular again after stopping hormonal contraception.
  • Teenage or early-twenties PCOS where the family wants a diet and routine plan before long-term medication.

02

How Dr. Bali approaches pcos and pcod

Charaka devotes a chapter of the Chikitsa Sthana to Yonivyapat, the disorders of the female reproductive system, and traces them to wrong diet and conduct, disturbed menstruation, defects in the reproductive tissue and disordered Vata. PCOS is not named as such, but its picture, delayed and scanty periods, weight gain, coarse hair, oily skin and difficulty conceiving, reads in classical terms as Kapha blocking the channel, Vata disturbing its flow, and Artava, the reproductive tissue, going short.

Dr. Bali reads which side dominates. Kapha-heavy PCOS shows weight gain, sluggish digestion, heavy and infrequent periods and insulin resistance; Vata-heavy PCOS shows a lean build, scanty painful periods, anxiety and poor sleep; Pitta adds acne, hair fall and heat. The diet, formulation and any Panchakarma are set to that reading, and the cycle is tracked month by month as the measure of progress.

Classical reference · Artava dushti

Charaka's Yonivyapat chapter lists twenty disorders of the reproductive system and gives four root causes: faulty diet and habits, disturbed menstruation, defects of the reproductive tissue and disordered Vata, with Vata named as the Dosha that must be settled first in every case. Sushruta's second Sharira chapter describes healthy Artava and the kinds of disturbed Artava by Dosha, which is how Ayurvedic physicians classify the menstrual picture of PCOS.

What the assessment looks at

  • Cycle history: length, flow, pain, and how it has changed with weight, stress or medication.
  • Signs of insulin resistance: weight around the middle, cravings, darkened skin folds, family history of diabetes.
  • Hair, skin and acne pattern, and whether Pitta is adding heat to a Kapha picture.
  • Digestion, sleep, activity and daily routine, since these decide whether the plan will hold.
  • Prakriti and Nadi, plus recent ultrasound, hormone and blood sugar reports if you have them.

When to see a doctor locally first

Bleeding between periods or after intercourse, very heavy bleeding with dizziness, no period for over three months without a known cause, severe pelvic pain, or a positive pregnancy test need a local gynecologist first. Do not stop the pill, metformin or fertility medication without your prescriber; Dr. Bali will plan any change with them.

What treatment may include

  1. 01

    Diet for Kapha and insulin

Regular warm meals with fewer refined carbohydrates and less sugar, more pulses, vegetables and spices that support digestion, set to your Dosha and to the food you actually cook at home.

  2. 02

    A sample daily routine (Dinacharya)

Wake before sunrise, warm water, thirty to forty minutes of brisk walking or yoga, breakfast by eight, the main meal at midday, a light dinner before eight, no screens for an hour before bed, asleep by ten thirty. Adjusted to your hours at the first review.

  3. 03

    Herbal formulations

Shatavari, Kanchanar Guggulu, Ashoka, Lodhra, Guduchi or Varuna in combinations set to your pattern: Kanchanar Guggulu where Kapha and cysts dominate, Ashoka and Lodhra where bleeding is heavy or irregular, Shatavari where Artava is depleted. Dispensed with a certificate of analysis.

  4. 04

    Yoga and movement

A short daily practice of postures and breathing set to your capacity, drawing on Dr. Bali's Diploma in Yoga Therapy, because regular movement is the most reliable lever on insulin and Kapha.

  5. 05

    Virechana and Uttarabasti in-clinic

Medicated purgation (Virechana) to clear Kapha and Pitta, and Uttarabasti, medicated oil given through the vaginal route, for stubborn cases and for women trying to conceive. Both are given at the clinic in Chandigarh under supervision.

  6. 06

    Cycle tracking and follow-up

Review at six weeks and then every two months, with the cycle tracked as the measure of progress. Online patients are followed by video with formulations shipped to them.

The combination is set after assessment, not before. Dr. Bali does not recommend the same protocol for every patient with the same diagnosis.

04

Formulations, shipping and the law

Formulations Dr. Bali prescribes are dispensed in India and shipped to patients abroad by tracked courier, typically within 7 to 14 days. Each parcel carries an itemised invoice, an ingredient declaration and the batch certificate of analysis. Patients in India receive them by courier within 2 to 4 days, or collect them at the Chandigarh clinic.

  • Every batch is tested by an independent laboratory for identity, heavy metals, pesticides and microbial contamination. The certificate ships with the parcel and is emailed to you.
  • Mineral-based classical preparations (Bhasma) are not shipped internationally. Dr. Bali prescribes plant-based formulations for patients abroad.
  • Shipments stay within a three-month supply so they clear customs as personal-use supplements. Country-specific rules are on each country page.
  • In-clinic procedures such as Basti, Ksharasutra and full Panchakarma are given in Chandigarh; the assessment, diet and formulations can be managed by video.
  • Consultation fees are confirmed at booking. Formulation costs are quoted before anything is dispensed.

Dr. Bali is licensed to practise Ayurveda in India. For patients abroad, an online consultation is an Ayurvedic assessment with guidance on diet, routine and classical formulations; it does not replace your local doctor, and prescribed medication is never stopped without the prescriber's agreement.

Comparison

Ayurveda vs Allopathy for PCOS: An Honest Comparison

Conventional medicine treats PCOS symptom by symptom: the pill for cycles and acne, metformin for insulin resistance, letrozole for ovulation. It should lead when you are trying to conceive on a timeline or need endometrial protection. Ayurveda treats the pattern behind the symptoms, Kapha, Ama and weak Agni, through diet, formulations and routine, and runs alongside prescribed drugs.

05

Frequently asked questions

Can Ayurveda treat PCOS without the pill or metformin?

For many women with mild to moderate PCOS, diet, routine, movement and formulations regulate the cycle without hormonal treatment. If you already take the pill or metformin, the plan begins alongside it and any change is made with your prescriber. Where insulin resistance is severe or fertility is time-critical, both systems are used together.

How long does Ayurvedic treatment for PCOS take?

Digestion, energy and skin usually improve within four to six weeks. Cycle regularity is slower because each cycle is a single data point: expect three to six months before periods settle into a pattern, and longer where weight and insulin resistance are marked. The routine and diet continue after the formulations reduce.

Can Ayurveda help me get pregnant with PCOS?

Treatment that restores regular ovulation, corrects Artava and settles Vata supports conception, and Uttarabasti in Chandigarh is used for this purpose in suitable cases. It is not a substitute for fertility assessment: tell Dr. Bali and your gynecologist what each other is doing, and get tubal and partner tests done locally if you have been trying for over a year.

Which Ayurvedic medicine is best for PCOS?

No single medicine. Kanchanar Guggulu is the classical choice where Kapha and cysts dominate; Ashoka and Lodhra where bleeding is heavy or irregular; Shatavari where Artava is depleted and periods are scanty; Guduchi and Varuna for Pitta and Kapha respectively. Dr. Bali sets the combination after assessment.

Can I consult for PCOS online from the USA, UK or Australia?

Yes. Assessment, diet, routine, yoga instruction and formulations are all managed by video, with your ultrasound and blood reports shared in advance and plant-based formulations shipped to you with customs paperwork and a certificate of analysis. Virechana and Uttarabasti require a visit to Chandigarh; most online patients are managed without them.

Will PCOS come back after Ayurvedic treatment?

PCOS is a long-term tendency, not an infection, and the cycle can slip again if diet, routine and movement lapse. That is why the plan puts most of its weight on habits you can keep. Patients who hold the routine usually hold the cycle; those who return to late nights, skipped meals and inactivity usually see it drift.

What diet does Ayurveda recommend for PCOS?

A Kapha-reducing pattern: regular warm cooked meals, fewer refined carbohydrates and sugars, more pulses, vegetables, whole grains and digestive spices, a light early dinner, and no grazing between meals. It is set to your Dosha and to the food you already cook, not to an imported meal plan. Specific foods are adjusted at each review.

What does treatment cost?

Consultation fees are confirmed when you book and depend on the consultation type. Formulation costs depend on the plan and are quoted before anything is dispensed, so there are no surprises after the consultation.
