In short

Ayurveda supports hypothyroidism by treating the sluggish metabolism, weight gain, fatigue and hair loss that come with it, reading the pattern as Kapha and Meda (fat tissue) accumulation with low Agni. Dr. Bali prescribes diet, routine and formulations such as Kanchanar Guggulu alongside your levothyroxine, never in place of it, with TSH monitored by your prescribing doctor.

01

Who this page is for

  • Hypothyroidism on levothyroxine with TSH in range but fatigue, weight gain, hair fall or low mood that have not lifted.
  • Subclinical hypothyroidism where your doctor is watching rather than treating, and you want to support the thyroid meanwhile.
  • Hashimoto's thyroiditis with fluctuating symptoms, once your endocrinologist is managing the medication.
  • Thyroid symptoms alongside PCOS, obesity or fatty liver, which Ayurveda often reads as one metabolic pattern.
  • A goitre or thyroid swelling that has been investigated and found benign.

02

How Dr. Bali approaches thyroid disorders

There is no thyroid in the classical texts, and Dr. Bali says so plainly. What the texts describe is Galaganda, a swelling at the front of the neck, and a broader metabolic pattern: low Agni, Kapha accumulation, poorly formed Meda (fat tissue), heaviness, cold, slow bowels and dull skin and hair. That pattern matches hypothyroidism closely, and it is the pattern that Ayurveda treats.

Ayurveda does not replace the hormone. If your thyroid makes too little, levothyroxine supplies it and is not stopped. What Ayurvedic treatment can do is address the terrain: the digestion, weight, energy, bowel habit, hair and skin that often stay poor even when TSH is in range. Dr. Bali works alongside your prescribing doctor, with TSH checked at the usual intervals, so any dose change is theirs to make.

Classical reference · Galaganda

Sushruta describes Galaganda as a swelling at the front of the neck that hangs like a pouch, and classifies it by the dominant factor: Vata, Kapha and Meda types, each with its own texture and course. Treatment combines internal formulations that reduce Kapha and Meda, external applications and, for large swellings, procedures. Charaka's chapter on the overweight body describes the sluggish, heavy, cold pattern that Dr. Bali reads in most hypothyroid patients.

Sushruta Samhita, Nidana Sthana, chapter 11 (Granthi, Apachi, Arbuda and Galaganda Nidana) and Chikitsa Sthana (Galaganda Chikitsa); Charaka Samhita, Sutra Sthana, chapter 21 (Ashtauninditiya) on Kapha-Meda accumulation

What the assessment looks at

  • Your latest TSH, free T4 and antibody results, current dose and how long you have been on it. He will ask for tests where missing.
  • Symptoms that persist despite treatment: fatigue, weight, cold intolerance, constipation, hair fall, dry skin, low mood, menstrual change.
  • Agni, bowel habit, meal timing and sleep, which set the Kapha-Meda pattern.
  • Any neck swelling, and whether it has been scanned.
  • Related conditions: PCOS, fatty liver, high cholesterol, anaemia, which change the plan.

When to see a doctor locally first

A rapidly growing or hard neck swelling, difficulty swallowing or breathing, hoarseness that persists, a racing heart, tremor or unexplained weight loss (which point to an overactive thyroid), severe fatigue with confusion or a very slow pulse, or thyroid symptoms in pregnancy need a local doctor or endocrinologist first. Any thyroid nodule should be scanned before Ayurvedic treatment. Dr. Bali will ask about these first.

What treatment may include

  1. 01

    Continuing your prescribed hormone

Levothyroxine is taken as prescribed, on an empty stomach and at least four hours apart from any Ayurvedic formulation, so absorption is not affected. Any dose change is made by your prescribing doctor on TSH results.

  2. 02

    Diet for low Agni

Warm, light, freshly cooked food, reduced dairy, heavy and cold foods, and fixed meal times. Dr. Bali sets the specifics to your Prakriti and to what you can actually keep up.

  3. 03

    Kapha-Meda formulations

Classical preparations such as Kanchanar Guggulu, with Guggulu-based and Punarnava-based formulations where weight, swelling or water retention are prominent, dispensed with a certificate of analysis.

  4. 04

    Daily routine

Early rising, regular exercise suited to your energy, and a sleep schedule that supports the sluggish metabolism rather than deepening it.

  5. 05

    Panchakarma where indicated

Udvartana (herbal powder massage) for Kapha and Meda, and in selected cases Virechana or Basti, given in Chandigarh under supervision. Not every case needs it.

  6. 06

    Follow-up

A review at six to eight weeks with symptoms and, where due, a fresh TSH. Online patients are followed by video with formulations shipped to them, and Dr. Bali will write to your local doctor if you wish.

The combination is set after assessment, not before. Dr. Bali does not recommend the same protocol for every patient with the same diagnosis.

04

Formulations, shipping and the law

Formulations Dr. Bali prescribes are dispensed in India and shipped to patients abroad by tracked courier, typically within 7 to 14 days. Each parcel carries an itemised invoice, an ingredient declaration and the batch certificate of analysis. Patients in India receive them by courier within 2 to 4 days, or collect them at the Chandigarh clinic.

  • Every batch is tested by an independent laboratory for identity, heavy metals, pesticides and microbial contamination. The certificate ships with the parcel and is emailed to you.
  • Mineral-based classical preparations (Bhasma) are not shipped internationally. Dr. Bali prescribes plant-based formulations for patients abroad.
  • Shipments stay within a three-month supply so they clear customs as personal-use supplements. Country-specific rules are on each country page.
  • In-clinic procedures such as Basti, Ksharasutra and full Panchakarma are given in Chandigarh; the assessment, diet and formulations can be managed by video.
  • Consultation fees are confirmed at booking. Formulation costs are quoted before anything is dispensed.

Dr. Bali is licensed to practise Ayurveda in India. For patients abroad, an online consultation is an Ayurvedic assessment with guidance on diet, routine and classical formulations; it does not replace your local doctor, and prescribed medication is never stopped without the prescriber's agreement.

Frequently asked questions

Can Ayurveda treat hypothyroidism?

Ayurveda supports it. It treats the sluggish metabolism, weight, fatigue, hair fall and bowel habit that hypothyroidism brings, and in subclinical cases may help the pattern settle while your doctor monitors TSH. It does not replace thyroid hormone in established hypothyroidism, and Dr. Bali will not suggest it does.

Should I stop my thyroid medicine if I start Ayurvedic treatment?

No, never without your prescribing doctor. Levothyroxine replaces a hormone your body is not making enough of, and stopping it causes symptoms to return within weeks and can be dangerous. Ayurvedic treatment runs alongside it. If your TSH improves over time, dose changes are made by the doctor who prescribed it, on blood results.

How long does Ayurvedic treatment for thyroid take?

Energy, bowel habit and digestion usually improve within six to eight weeks. Weight and hair take longer, typically three to six months. Treatment is reviewed against symptoms and TSH at the usual testing intervals, and a maintenance plan of diet and routine continues after formulations are reduced.

Can I consult for thyroid online from the USA, the UK or Australia?

Yes. Dr. Bali reviews your thyroid results and history by video, prescribes diet and formulations that are shipped to you with customs documentation and a certificate of analysis, and asks you to keep your usual TSH testing with your local doctor. Mineral-based classical preparations are not shipped abroad; plant-based formulations are used.

Is Kanchanar Guggulu good for thyroid?

Kanchanar Guggulu is the classical formulation for Galaganda and other Kapha-Meda swellings, and it is often part of a hypothyroid plan. It is not a thyroid hormone and does not replace one. Whether it suits you, and at what dose, depends on your Dosha pattern, digestion and other conditions, so it is prescribed after assessment.

Does Ayurveda help with Hashimoto's?

Hashimoto's is autoimmune, and Ayurveda treats the terrain around it: digestion, Ama, stress and the Kapha-Meda pattern, which often eases the fluctuating fatigue and weight. Antibody levels and hormone dosing stay with your endocrinologist. Dr. Bali will tell you honestly what he expects in your case.

Will Ayurvedic medicine interfere with levothyroxine?

Formulations are timed at least four hours apart from levothyroxine so absorption is unaffected, and Dr. Bali avoids anything that would compete with it. Tell him every medicine and supplement you take, including iron and calcium, which also affect absorption.

What does treatment cost?

Consultation fees are confirmed when you book and depend on the consultation type. Formulation costs depend on the plan and are quoted before anything is dispensed, so there are no surprises after the consultation.
