Ayurvedic Treatment for Eczema and Recurring Skin Problems

Ayurveda treats eczema (Vicharchika) as a skin disorder driven by impaired digestion and accumulated Pitta and Kapha in the blood and skin tissue. Dr. Bali corrects Agni and diet, uses blood-purifying formulations built around Nimba, Manjishtha and Khadira, medicated oils for the skin, and Virechana where the case is entrenched. Steroid creams are tapered, not stopped abruptly.

Who this page is for
- Eczema that flares again every time a steroid cream is stopped.
- Itchy, weeping or thickened patches on the hands, elbows, knees or face that have lasted more than three months.
- Childhood eczema that has continued into adulthood, or adult-onset eczema with no clear trigger.
- Skin that flares with certain foods, stress or seasons, and you want the pattern understood rather than suppressed.
- Eczema alongside acidity, constipation or poor digestion, which Ayurveda treats as one problem.

How Dr. Bali approaches eczema
In classical Ayurveda, eczema falls under Kushtha, the broad group of skin disorders, and its closest description is Vicharchika: itching, discharge, dark or thickened patches, often on the limbs. The texts do not treat the skin in isolation. Impaired Agni produces Ama, which spreads through the blood (Rakta) and settles in the skin. Creams calm the surface; the source stays inside.
Dr. Bali reads eczema by Dosha. Pitta-dominant eczema is red, hot, weeping and burns; Kapha-dominant is pale, thick, wet and itchy with slow spread; Vata-dominant is dry, scaly, cracked and worse in winter. Most cases mix two. The pattern, together with your Prakriti, bowel habit and diet, decides the formulation, the oil and whether Virechana is worth doing.
Classical reference · Vicharchika
Charaka groups all skin disease as Kushtha and lists Vicharchika among the eleven Kshudra Kushtha, the lesser forms, describing it by itching, dark discoloration, discharge and raised lesions. He holds that every Kushtha involves all three Doshas with one dominant, and prescribes internal cleansing (Shodhana) first, then blood-purifying herbs, external medicated oils and a strict diet, with repeated mild purgation rather than one heavy course.

What the assessment looks at
- Site, pattern and character of the lesions: dry or weeping, red or dark, thickened or cracked.
- Trigger history: foods, seasons, stress, detergents, and how long steroid creams have been used.
- Agni and bowel habit, since chronic eczema rarely sits alongside good digestion.
- Dosha pattern of the eczema and your underlying Prakriti.
- Whether an infection, a contact allergy or another condition needs local care first (see the note below).
When to see a doctor locally first
Eczema with fever, spreading redness, yellow crusting or pus, painful clusters of small blisters, or sudden widespread flaring needs a local doctor first, as these can be bacterial or herpes infection. Eczema around the eyes affecting vision, and any rash in an infant under one year, should also be seen locally before Ayurvedic treatment. Dr. Bali will ask about these first.

What treatment may include
- 01
Correcting Agni and diet
Removal of foods that aggravate Pitta and Kapha in your case, typically curd, fermented and sour foods, excess salt and incompatible combinations, with meal timing set to your digestion.
- 02
Blood-purifying formulations
Classical preparations built around Nimba, Manjishtha, Khadira, Sariva and Guduchi, chosen for your Dosha pattern and dispensed with a certificate of analysis.
- 03
Medicated oils and washes
External oils and decoction washes to settle itching, soften thickened skin and reduce cracking, chosen to suit whether the eczema is dry or weeping.
- 04
Virechana where the case is entrenched
A supervised course of therapeutic purgation, the principal Pitta therapy, for long-standing or widespread eczema. Given in Chandigarh after preparation with internal oleation.
- 05
Tapering steroid creams
A planned reduction of topical steroids as the skin settles, in step with your dermatologist where you have one. Stopping abruptly usually causes a rebound flare.
- 06
Follow-up
A review at four to six weeks, then every two to three months through at least one seasonal change. Online patients are followed by video with formulations shipped to them.
The combination is set after assessment, not before. Dr. Bali does not recommend the same protocol for every patient with the same diagnosis.
04
Formulations, shipping and the law
Formulations Dr. Bali prescribes are dispensed in India and shipped to patients abroad by tracked courier, typically within 7 to 14 days. Each parcel carries an itemised invoice, an ingredient declaration and the batch certificate of analysis. Patients in India receive them by courier within 2 to 4 days, or collect them at the Chandigarh clinic.
- Every batch is tested by an independent laboratory for identity, heavy metals, pesticides and microbial contamination. The certificate ships with the parcel and is emailed to you.
- Mineral-based classical preparations (Bhasma) are not shipped internationally. Dr. Bali prescribes plant-based formulations for patients abroad.
- Shipments stay within a three-month supply so they clear customs as personal-use supplements. Country-specific rules are on each country page.
- In-clinic procedures such as Basti, Ksharasutra and full Panchakarma are given in Chandigarh; the assessment, diet and formulations can be managed by video.
- Consultation fees are confirmed at booking. Formulation costs are quoted before anything is dispensed.
Dr. Bali is licensed to practise Ayurveda in India. For patients abroad, an online consultation is an Ayurvedic assessment with guidance on diet, routine and classical formulations; it does not replace your local doctor, and prescribed medication is never stopped without the prescriber's agreement.

Frequently asked questions
Can Ayurveda treat eczema without steroids?
In many cases the skin can be settled and kept settled with diet, internal formulations and external oils, so that steroid creams are no longer needed day to day. Dr. Bali tapers rather than stops them. Severe or infected eczema may still need a short steroid course while the internal treatment takes effect, and he will say so.
How long does Ayurvedic treatment for eczema take?
Itching and weeping usually ease within three to six weeks once diet and formulations are in place. Thickened, long-standing patches take longer, typically three to six months, and the plan is usually kept through at least one full seasonal change, since eczema tends to flare with the weather.
Is eczema the same as Vicharchika in Ayurveda?
Close, though not identical. Vicharchika describes itchy, discharging, dark or raised lesions and is the nearest classical picture of eczema. Some dry, scaly presentations map better to other Kushtha types. Dr. Bali treats the picture in front of him, not the label.
Can I consult for eczema online from the USA, the UK or Australia?
Yes. Eczema is well suited to video consultation: Dr. Bali examines the skin on camera and by photographs, takes a full history, and prescribes diet, formulations and oils that are shipped to you with customs documentation and a certificate of analysis. Virechana requires a visit to Chandigarh and is not needed in every case.
Which foods should I avoid with eczema?
The list is set case by case, but the usual suspects in Ayurveda are curd, fermented and sour foods, excess salt, fish with milk, and heavy, oily or reheated food. Cold water and late meals weaken Agni. Dr. Bali gives a written list at the first consultation, adjusted to your Dosha and to what you actually eat.
Is Ayurvedic eczema treatment safe for children?
Diet correction, gentle formulations and external oils are commonly used in children, with doses set by age and weight. Virechana is not used in young children. Please share the child's full history, including any steroid or antihistamine use, before a plan is made.
Will eczema come back after Ayurvedic treatment?
Flares are less frequent and milder when Agni, diet and routine are corrected and kept corrected, which is why they form the core of the plan. Eczema treated only at the surface, by any system, tends to return with the next trigger.
What does treatment cost?
Consultation fees are confirmed when you book and depend on the consultation type. Formulation costs depend on the plan and are quoted before anything is dispensed, so there are no surprises after the consultation.
