Ayurvedic Treatment for Psoriasis

Ayurveda treats psoriasis (Kitibha or Ekakushtha) as a Kushtha, a skin disorder rooted in all three Doshas with vitiated blood (Rakta), fed by incompatible food, stress and weak digestion. Dr. Bali assesses the pattern, then combines diet, formulations built on Khadira, Manjishtha, Nimba and Sariva, and Virechana in Chandigarh. Psoriasis relapses; the aim is longer, fuller remissions with fewer flares.

Who this page is for
- Plaque psoriasis on the elbows, knees, scalp or trunk that returns each time steroid creams are stopped.
- Psoriasis that flares with stress, winter, alcohol or particular foods.
- Scalp psoriasis with heavy scaling and hair fall, or nail changes.
- Long-standing psoriasis where you want to reduce reliance on methotrexate or biologics, with your dermatologist's agreement.
- Early psoriatic joint pain alongside skin plaques, once a rheumatologist has assessed the joints.

How Dr. Bali approaches psoriasis
Charaka groups all chronic skin diseases as Kushtha and states that every Kushtha involves all three Doshas together with four body tissues: the skin, blood, muscle and lymph. Among the eleven minor Kushthas, Kitibha is described as rough, dry, blackish and hard like a scar, and Ekakushtha as widespread scaling that resembles fish skin. Between them they describe plaque psoriasis closely. The causes listed include incompatible food combinations, suppressing natural urges, heavy food on top of undigested food, and sustained mental strain.
Dr. Bali reads which Dosha leads. Vata-dominant plaques are dry, cracked and painful; Pitta-dominant are red, burning and inflamed; Kapha-dominant are thick, pale and itchy with heavy scale. He is direct about the nature of the disease: psoriasis is chronic and relapsing in every system of medicine, and the honest aim is a longer remission, a milder flare, and less dependence on strong drugs, achieved by treating the blood and digestion rather than the plaque alone.

The Nidana chapter names the seven major and eleven minor forms of Kushtha, with Kitibha and Ekakushtha among the minor forms, and lists the diet, conduct and mental causes. The Chikitsa chapter sets out treatment in order: repeated internal cleansing by Virechana and bloodletting for the Dosha-heavy patient, then pacifying formulations built on Khadira, Nimba and bitter herbs, external oils and pastes, and strict diet, with the warning that Kushtha returns if the causes are resumed.

What the assessment looks at
- Site, thickness and color of the plaques, scale, itch, cracking, and nail or scalp involvement.
- Flare pattern: season, stress, alcohol, infections, and which foods make it worse.
- Digestion and Agni, bowel habit and incompatible food habits, since the texts put the cause in the gut.
- Joints: morning stiffness or swelling that suggests psoriatic arthritis.
- Prakriti, Nadi and the leading Dosha, and current medication including steroids, methotrexate or biologics.
When to see a doctor locally first
Psoriasis covering most of the body with redness, chills and feeling unwell, pus-filled spots on red skin, a sudden flare with fever, painful swollen joints, or eye pain and redness need a local dermatologist or emergency care first. Do not stop methotrexate, cyclosporine or a biologic on your own; Dr. Bali will plan any reduction with your prescriber.

What treatment may include
- 01
Diet and Nidana Parivarjana
Removal of the causes first: incompatible combinations such as milk with fish or salt, curd at night, heavy late meals, alcohol and excess sour and salty food, with a warm, plain diet set for your Dosha.
- 02
Blood-purifying formulations
Khadira, Manjishtha, Nimba, Sariva and Guduchi in combinations set to the leading Dosha, the classical Raktashodhaka herbs, dispensed with a certificate of analysis. Arogyavardhini Vati, a mineral-containing preparation, is used for patients in India and replaced by plant-based formulations for patients abroad.
- 03
External care
Medicated oils and pastes for the plaques and scalp, chosen for dryness or inflammation, with guidance on bathing and moisturizing that does not strip the skin.
- 04
Virechana
Medicated purgation after preparatory oleation, the principal cleansing therapy for Kushtha, given as a course at the clinic in Chandigarh under supervision and repeated at intervals for heavy cases.
- 05
Raktamokshana where indicated
Controlled bloodletting, usually by leech, for localized inflamed plaques, done in-clinic and only where the texts and the presentation support it.
- 06
Stress, sleep and follow-up
Routine, pranayama and sleep correction, since stress is the commonest trigger of a flare, with review at six weeks and then every two months. Online patients are followed by video with formulations shipped to them.
The combination is set after assessment, not before. Dr. Bali does not recommend the same protocol for every patient with the same diagnosis.
04
Formulations, shipping and the law
Formulations Dr. Bali prescribes are dispensed in India and shipped to patients abroad by tracked courier, typically within 7 to 14 days. Each parcel carries an itemised invoice, an ingredient declaration and the batch certificate of analysis. Patients in India receive them by courier within 2 to 4 days, or collect them at the Chandigarh clinic.
- Every batch is tested by an independent laboratory for identity, heavy metals, pesticides and microbial contamination. The certificate ships with the parcel and is emailed to you.
- Mineral-based classical preparations (Bhasma) are not shipped internationally. Dr. Bali prescribes plant-based formulations for patients abroad.
- Shipments stay within a three-month supply so they clear customs as personal-use supplements. Country-specific rules are on each country page.
- In-clinic procedures such as Basti, Ksharasutra and full Panchakarma are given in Chandigarh; the assessment, diet and formulations can be managed by video.
- Consultation fees are confirmed at booking. Formulation costs are quoted before anything is dispensed.
Dr. Bali is licensed to practise Ayurveda in India. For patients abroad, an online consultation is an Ayurvedic assessment with guidance on diet, routine and classical formulations; it does not replace your local doctor, and prescribed medication is never stopped without the prescriber's agreement.

Ayurveda vs Allopathy for Psoriasis: An Honest Comparison
Conventional medicine has strong tools for psoriasis: topical steroids and vitamin D analogues for limited plaques, phototherapy, methotrexate, and biologics that clear moderate to severe disease in many patients. Ayurveda treats psoriasis as Kushtha, a disorder of Pitta, Kapha and blood, with diet, Virechana and formulations, aiming for longer remission and fewer flares. Neither side needs to be abandoned.

Frequently asked questions
Can psoriasis be treated with Ayurveda?
Yes, as a chronic condition to be managed rather than a problem to be removed. Diet correction, blood-purifying formulations, external care and Virechana aim to clear the plaques, lengthen the remission and reduce dependence on steroids and immunosuppressants. Psoriasis relapses in every system of medicine; Dr. Bali will say so at the first consultation.
How long does Ayurvedic treatment for psoriasis take?
Itch, scaling and new plaques usually reduce within six to eight weeks of diet correction and formulations. Substantial clearing typically takes four to six months, longer for thick long-standing plaques and for scalp and nail disease. Maintenance diet and periodic review continue after that, because remission has to be kept, not just reached.
Will psoriasis come back after Ayurvedic treatment?
It can. Charaka himself warns that Kushtha returns when the causes are resumed. The honest aim is a longer and fuller remission with milder flares, and patients who hold the diet, manage stress and sleep, and return for review at the first sign of a flare do best. Anyone promising that psoriasis will never return is not being straight with you.
Which Ayurvedic medicine is best for psoriasis?
There is no single best medicine. Khadira, Nimba and Manjishtha are the classical blood-purifying herbs for Kushtha; Sariva and Guduchi are added for Pitta heat; Arogyavardhini Vati for patients in India where the liver and digestion need support. The combination is set to the leading Dosha after assessment, not before.
Can I consult for psoriasis online from the USA, UK or Canada?
Yes. Assessment by video with clear photographs of the plaques, diet correction, external care and plant-based formulations are all managed online, with formulations shipped with customs paperwork and a certificate of analysis. Virechana and Raktamokshana require a visit to Chandigarh; mineral preparations are not shipped abroad.
What foods should I avoid with psoriasis according to Ayurveda?
The Kushtha chapters single out incompatible combinations, particularly milk with fish, milk with salty or sour food, and curd at night, as well as alcohol, heavy fried food, excess sour and salty tastes, and eating before the previous meal is digested. The exact list is set to your Dosha and to what actually triggers your flares.
Can I continue steroid cream or methotrexate during Ayurvedic treatment?
Yes, and you should not stop either on your own. Steroid creams are tapered gradually as the plaques settle, to avoid rebound. Methotrexate, cyclosporine and biologics continue until your dermatologist agrees to reduce them. Tell Dr. Bali exactly what you use so the plan is built around it.
What does treatment cost?
Consultation fees are confirmed when you book and depend on the consultation type. Formulation costs depend on the plan and are quoted before anything is dispensed, so there are no surprises after the consultation.
