In short

Ayurveda treats acidity and GERD (Amlapitta) by correcting the disturbed Agni and excess Pitta that sour the stomach, rather than by suppressing acid alone. Treatment uses diet and meal timing, cooling formulations such as Avipattikar Churna, Amalaki and Shatavari, and Virechana where indicated to clear accumulated Pitta. Dr. Bali assesses your pattern, triggers and any endoscopy before prescribing.

01

Who this page is for

  • Heartburn, sour belching or burning in the chest and throat several times a week.
  • GERD that returns each time you stop antacids or proton pump inhibitors.
  • Bloating, nausea and heaviness after meals with acidity.
  • Reflux at night, a sour taste on waking, or a hoarse voice and cough from reflux.
  • Acidity tied to stress, irregular meals, late dinners or alcohol that you want to correct at the root.

02

How Dr. Bali approaches acidity and gerd

Madhava Nidana describes Amlapitta as the outcome of Pitta turned sour: indigestion, fatigue, nausea, sour or bitter belching, heaviness and burning in the chest and throat. The cause is Agni disturbed by incompatible food, irregular meals, spice, alcohol, anger and stress, so that food ferments rather than digests. Antacids reduce the acid that results; they leave the Agni that produced it untouched, which is why acidity returns.

Dr. Bali reads the case by pattern. Pitta-dominant acidity burns, is worse with heat and spice, and needs cooling and mild purgation. Kapha-associated acidity brings heaviness, nausea and a thick coating on the tongue, and needs lightening and digestive support. Vata-associated acidity comes with anxiety, irregular eating and bloating, and needs regularity first. The plan follows the reading.

Classical reference · Amlapitta

Madhava Nidana gives the first full description of Amlapitta and its signs: indigestion, nausea, sour belching, heaviness and burning in the chest and throat. Kashyapa attributes it to eating against the rules of diet, worst in damp regions, and treats it with purgation and a cooling, light diet. Charaka's Grahani chapter explains Agni itself and holds that no digestive disease settles while Agni is disturbed.

What the assessment looks at

  • Symptom pattern: burning, sour belching, bloating, nausea, night reflux, and what brings it on.
  • Meals: timing, gaps, late dinners, tea and coffee, spice, alcohol, and how fast you eat.
  • Any endoscopy, H. pylori test or medicines, including how long you have been on acid suppressants.
  • Tongue, pulse, bowel habit and sleep, which show how Agni and Pitta are behaving.
  • Stress and its timing, because acidity in many patients follows the working week.

When to see a doctor locally first

Difficulty or pain on swallowing, vomiting blood or material like coffee grounds, black stool, unexplained weight loss, persistent vomiting, anemia, or new symptoms after the age of 50 need a local doctor and usually an endoscopy first. Chest pain that spreads to the arm, jaw or back, or comes with sweating or breathlessness, may be the heart and needs emergency care, not an antacid. Dr. Bali will ask about these before treatment.

03

What treatment may include

  1. 01

    Diet and meal timing

Specific foods to add and drop for your pattern, regular meal gaps, an earlier and lighter dinner, and how to break the tea, coffee and late-night habits that keep Pitta stirred.

  2. 02

    Cooling and digestive formulations

Avipattikar Churna, Amalaki, Shatavari, Guduchi or Musta as indicated, chosen for your pattern and dispensed with a certificate of analysis.

  3. 03

    Virechana where indicated

Supervised therapeutic purgation, the classical treatment for accumulated Pitta, given in Chandigarh after preparation for entrenched or long-standing Amlapitta. It is not used in every case.

  4. 04

    Tapering acid suppressants

Where you have been on a proton pump inhibitor for a long time, a gradual step-down alongside treatment, agreed with your prescribing doctor, so that rebound acidity does not undo the progress.

  5. 05

    Stress and sleep

Simple daily practices and timing changes, because Pitta and Agni follow the mind and the clock, and late nights are a common driver.

  6. 06

    Follow-up

A review at three to four weeks to adjust diet and formulation, then as needed. Online patients are followed by video with prescribed formulations shipped to them.

The combination is set after assessment, not before. Dr. Bali does not recommend the same protocol for every patient with the same diagnosis.

04

Formulations, shipping and the law

Formulations Dr. Bali prescribes are dispensed in India and shipped to patients abroad by tracked courier, typically within 7 to 14 days. Each parcel carries an itemised invoice, an ingredient declaration and the batch certificate of analysis. Patients in India receive them by courier within 2 to 4 days, or collect them at the Chandigarh clinic.

  • Every batch is tested by an independent laboratory for identity, heavy metals, pesticides and microbial contamination. The certificate ships with the parcel and is emailed to you.
  • Mineral-based classical preparations (Bhasma) are not shipped internationally. Dr. Bali prescribes plant-based formulations for patients abroad.
  • Shipments stay within a three-month supply so they clear customs as personal-use supplements. Country-specific rules are on each country page.
  • In-clinic procedures such as Basti, Ksharasutra and full Panchakarma are given in Chandigarh; the assessment, diet and formulations can be managed by video.
  • Consultation fees are confirmed at booking. Formulation costs are quoted before anything is dispensed.

Dr. Bali is licensed to practise Ayurveda in India. For patients abroad, an online consultation is an Ayurvedic assessment with guidance on diet, routine and classical formulations; it does not replace your local doctor, and prescribed medication is never stopped without the prescriber's agreement.

Comparison

Ayurveda vs Allopathy for Acidity: An Honest Comparison

Conventional medicine is faster for acidity and reflux: PPIs settle symptoms within days, endoscopy finds ulcers and Barrett's changes, and H. pylori is tested for and treated. Ayurveda treats the pattern behind Amlapitta, Pitta aggravation and irregular eating, through diet, meal timing and formulations such as Avipattikar Churna, aiming to reduce long-term dependence on acid suppression.

05

Frequently asked questions

Can Ayurveda treat acidity without antacids?

For most patients, yes, over a few weeks. Antacids and proton pump inhibitors reduce acid; Ayurvedic treatment corrects the Agni and Pitta that produce it, through diet, meal timing and cooling formulations. Patients on long-term acid suppressants are stepped down gradually, with their prescribing doctor's agreement, rather than stopped at once.

How long does Ayurvedic treatment for acidity take?

Burning and sour belching usually ease within two to three weeks once meal timing and diet are corrected and formulations begin. Settling long-standing GERD and stepping off acid suppressants takes two to three months. Virechana, where used, is a short in-clinic course within that period. The diet and timing habits are what keep it settled afterward.

What is the best Ayurvedic medicine for acidity?

Avipattikar Churna is the classical first choice for Pitta-type acidity, and Amalaki and Shatavari are widely used to cool and protect the stomach lining. Kapha-associated cases need digestive support such as Musta instead of more cooling. The medicine is chosen for your pattern after assessment, and a wrong choice can make acidity worse.

Can I consult for acidity online from the USA, Canada or the UK?

Yes. Acidity is one of the conditions best suited to video consultation, because assessment, diet correction and formulations can all be managed remotely, with formulations shipped to you with customs documentation. Only Virechana requires a visit to Chandigarh, and it is needed in a minority of cases.

Does Ayurveda help with GERD and reflux at night?

Night reflux responds well to an earlier, lighter dinner, a gap of three hours before lying down and the cooling formulations, because the stomach is emptier and calmer at bedtime. Where the lower food pipe has been weakened by years of reflux, improvement is slower and endoscopy follow-up with your local doctor continues.

Is it safe to stop omeprazole or pantoprazole for Ayurvedic treatment?

Not abruptly. Stopping a proton pump inhibitor after long use causes rebound acidity, so the drug is tapered over weeks while the Ayurvedic plan takes effect, in agreement with the doctor who prescribed it. Dr. Bali will ask what you take and for how long at the first consultation.

Why does my acidity come back after treatment?

Because the habits that disturb Agni, late dinners, long gaps between meals, tea on an empty stomach, spice and stress, have returned. Formulations settle the flare; timing and diet keep it settled. The plan spends as much effort on the second as on the first.

What does treatment cost?

Consultation fees are confirmed when you book and depend on the consultation type. Formulation costs depend on the plan and are quoted before anything is dispensed, so there are no surprises after the consultation.
